ABSTRACT:
Benchmarking performance using synthetic measurement data from high-speed backbone connections is a mature and accepted method of analyzing the health of Web sites. However, the concepts which are crucial to developing Web performance improvement strategies for Last Mile customers (and especially those using dialup connections) are often not considered, or even understood. This despite recent statistics indicating that approximately 45% of US Internet users still connect at bandwidths traditionally considered to be dialup (56kbps or lower). Optimizing performance for Last Mile customers is vital for companies that wish to define, achieve, and maintain Web performance excellence. In this paper, Last Mile performance data will be used to demonstrate how maximizing performance, managing change, and maintaining service levels for low-bandwidth customers allows companies to ensure Web performance excellence for all customers.
